Things to know about transporting and storing dangerous goods

What you need to be aware of when transporting and storing dangerous goods.

Are you and your company looking for a logistics partner to transport and store your chemicals? Then read on. In this post, we'll explain what you need to be aware of and what your logistics partner needs to know when transporting and storing dangerous goods.

Before we dive into the advice, it's important to emphasize that classified products cover many different things. It is therefore crucial that you are aware of whether the logistics partner you choose has the ability to transport and store the type of hazardous products you need to ship.

1) Do the drivers have the necessary certificates?

One of the most important points when it comes to the transportation of dangerous goods is whether your logistics partner is in control of certifying drivers so that they are approved to transport dangerous goods. This is because it is a requirement that truck drivers who transport dangerous goods have the necessary training and certification.

At H. Daugaard , most of our drivers have an ADR certificate, for example. This means that we can quickly and easily transport classified products without having to train our drivers to do so - they already know how.

In addition to drivers having the necessary training and certification to drive with dangerous goods, it is also important that your logistics partner has a safety advisor who, among other things, ensures that all rules and laws are complied with both in terms of transportation and storage. Not only during transportation, but especially in relation to the storage of the classified products.

2) Can your logistics partner handle your needs?

As previously mentioned, dangerous goods are not just dangerous goods. In fact, there are nine different main classes of dangerous goods, some of which have a number of sub-classes. It is therefore not a foregone conclusion that a logistics company can transport and store the exact class you need. Therefore, it's an important question to ask when choosing a logistics partner for the transportation and storage of chemicals and other dangerous goods

We can handle that!

At H. Daugaard , we can handle virtually all classes of hazardous substances, with a few exceptions. We do not transport and store class 1, which are explosives, class 2.3, which are toxic gases, class 6.2, which are infectious substances, and class 7, which are radioactive substances. In addition to these exceptions, we at H. Daugaard can handle the transportation of all the above classes of hazardous substances.

"A lot of what we have at the moment is pesticides and herbicides for the agricultural sector, and we also have a lot of paints that are flammable. We have to store a lot of flammable units." says Anders Søgaard Hansen, HESQ Manager at H. Daugaard and continues

"That's why we have particular expertise in transporting and storing chemicals for the agricultural sector and general expertise in storing and distributing flammable goods."

3) Can you store your chemicals before transportation?

The transportation of your chemicals is one thing, but it's also important that you consider whether a potential logistics partner can and may store your classified products in one of their warehouses. Among other things, this is important because it ensures you as a customer that your products are handled in accordance with the law and the right quality.

In addition, it will be easier for you if you choose a logistics partner who can and is allowed to store your products, as it gives you flexibility. That way, you don't have to worry about your logistics partner having to stop by you or a third party to pick up the classified products and then transport them to their destination.

For example, if you choose to have your chemicals stored at H. Daugaard's warehouse and have us handle the transportation, you can rest assured that you have a partner who will take care of your classified products during the entire transport from production to end user.

In addition, there is also great flexibility in having the option to keep your chemicals in one of our warehouses, where we almost always have the ability to deliver them overnight.

"There's a big advantage in that we can have it stored in the warehouse so it's always ready. For example, if the weather is suddenly right, the customer calls and says that it's time to spray or fertilize, so now they need to get their products to the end user," says Anders Søgaard-Hansen.
